The Value of Connection

Ned was always nervous talking on the phone, but when he attended a Samaritans info session, he was inspired. “The mission pushed me out of my comfort zone. The people were incredible.”

Ned has volunteered on the Helpline since 2017. Over the years, he has noticed an uptick in people calling who are lonely. “I find most people are calling for a listening ear. They just want a space to get their emotions out on the table.”

Enhancing his listening skills has been invaluable to Ned, not only on the Helpline but also in his everyday life. He believes that skill is attainable for everyone. “Being able to listen and sit in the emotions with your peers is truly such a valuable skill. It’s just a matter of changing your mindset, being very present with someone. It’s hard to find someone who truly listens, but the Helpline provides a dedicated space for that.”

For those who are hesitant to call the Helpline, Ned stresses that callers won’t be met with judgment. “We’re here to support you and sit with you in your pain. Whatever we can do to help get you through it, we’re here for you.”

Being on the Samaritans Helpline has shown me the value of connection. For someone who is feeling lonely, talking to another human can make a huge difference.
