A Space to be Heard

Lisa became a volunteer on the Samaritans helpline in 1975. Today, she is still involved as a member of our Council.

Samaritans began its mission to provide emotional support to those in need in the basement of the Arlington Street Church, where volunteers staffed phones and provided a listening ear to those in distress. Since 2020, volunteers and staff have operated the 24/7 Helpline fully remotely.

Though the way we operate has evolved, our mission and commitment to proving free, confidential, nonjudgmental support has remained the same.

It’s so simple creating a space for people to be heard. After all, isn’t that all anybody wants in life?

As we reflect on our history and look towards the future, we are thankful for the enduring commitment and compassion of our volunteers. We are beyond grateful for the many critical ways they support our crisis services.
