In recognition of Suicide Prevention Month and in response to escalating gun violence in the U.S., panelists from DeeDee’s Cry, the Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, the MGH Center for Gun Violence Prevention, and Samaritans will discuss connections between access to firearms and suicide risk.
This is Samaritans’ version of “Suicide Prevention 101" and is tailored to the general adult population. It serves as a great starting point for any person to get a feel for Samaritans as an organization, the services the organization provides, and for the prevention work we generally offer the public.
Experts have started to forecast the long lasting effects of mental health on the general population as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, including things like PTSD, anxiety, and agoraphobia. During this live session, Samaritans hopes to talk about these things and how they might be combated with updated self-care routines.
More so than ever, individuals are taking to social media to share posts, words, and resources that matter to them. When it comes to topics like suicide, individuals have some responsibility to post in a stigma-reducing, respectful way in order to support loss survivors and those struggling. This one-hour webinar will cover this topic with a suicide prevention lens.
During this presentation, the Community Education and Outreach team will spend time talking about the complexities that exist when talking to younger individuals about suicide and mental health, despite the fact that young people die by suicide at a rate much higher than almost any other population. This presentation will highlight statistics and skills that may be especially pertinent for the youth population. This training is useful for both caregivers to younger populations, and to those interested in the connection between youth and mental health, especially during this time.
Explore the connection between postpartum depression (PPD) and suicide, two often-stigmatized topics that Samaritans aims to shed important light on during this one-hour session. Learn about how to best support new parents with specialized language, and review some of the complexities of PPD that require special attention and thought.
It's no secret that social media plays a role in suicide prevention, both in how people are receiving support and in how they are sharing resources related to mental health and resiliency. In this one-hour session, join Samaritans to review responsible posting, discuss the role of social media in suicide prevention, and learn more about online tools that inspire hope and connection, especially COVID-19.

In this webinar, we will discuss what resiliency is, steps toward building resiliency, and how it relates to suicidality. Many experts working in suicide prevention believe that shifting efforts away from focusing on risk factors and towards focusing on resiliency can be a better way to help people that are struggling. While resiliency is not something that can be developed overnight, it can be improved upon with time and effort. We will discuss exercises and activities that can be done to help build resiliency and is for anyone who wants to learn more about supporting their well-being or others.
