Every year since 2021, Team Walking for Patrick has participated in the Annual Samaritans 5K Run/Walk for Suicide Prevention. Team Captain Susan started the team following her son’s death by suicide, and the event has become a meaningful way for Patrick’s family and friends to remember him.
Susan shared her journey with Samaritans and what Patrick’s memory means to her team.
How did you first hear about Samaritans? Have our services or community made a difference in your life or someone close to you?
We first heard about the Samaritans after our son Patrick passed away.
Our oldest son Billy’s work associate lost his sister and is active with Samaritans. He sent us a booklet with support information. At first, I just put it away until I was able to sit down and look at it. It was life changing.
I found a way to honor Patrick by walking in the 5K in his memory. Also, it helped me feel more open to talk about suicide and normalize conversation around mental health.
How many years have you participated in the Samaritans 5K with a team? What keeps you coming back year after year?
We first walked in 2021 during COVID and have walked every year since. It has helped us heal and remember all the amazing things about Patrick together. It also helps to see others coming together to support each other.
What’s been the most meaningful moment or memory for you at the Samaritans 5K?
I remember setting up in 2022, it was our first year at Artesani Park. We got there around 7 a.m. and set up our table. I was so nervous.
Then a volunteer came up to me and started talking to me and gave me a hug. It wasn’t any hug; it was one of support and understanding. It was then that I knew this walk would be a tradition, “Walking for Patrick.”
Is there anything else you’d like to share about the 5K or why you think others should join?
Since I lost Patrick, I have met so many people who have lost loved ones to suicide. Unfortunately, so many people say they didn’t realize they were struggling. We need to make mental health and suicide awareness part of normal conversation. The best way to do this is to spread awareness, and that is what the Samaritans 5K helps to achieve.
