Lifesaving Programs

Nearly 50,000 lives were lost to suicide in the United States in 2022 — more than the capacity of Fenway Park. In Massachusetts, one person dies by suicide every 14 hours. Certain communities are at higher risk, including young people, LGBTQ+ individuals, people of color, and those in certain professions. Our lifesaving services are safe, anonymous, and free to all who need them. We meet people where they are, without judgment, through crisis services, suicide grief support, and educational programs.

With Samaritans, everyone has somewhere to turn.

Want to get involved?

If you are passionate about preventing suicide, there are many meaningful ways for you to get involved. Check out the different opportunities to join our volunteer community – on our 24/7 Helpline, as a Grief Support Services facilitator, or providing event support.

Get the Support You’re Looking For

At Samaritans, we aim to prevent suicide and support those affected by it. Our services emphasize nonjudgmental and compassionate listening. We provide a 24/7 Helpline — part of the 988 National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline; Hey Sam, a mental health support textline for young people; peer support for those who are grieving a loss to suicide; and educational workshops so anyone can be part of our mission. Samaritans provides our lifesaving programs throughout Greater Boston and MetroWest Massachusetts.

Celebrating 50 Years

On April 4, 1974, the first American branch of Samaritans was founded with just 22 volunteers, rotary phones, and an open door. From our humble beginnings, we have grown and flourished, helping millions of people find hope in human connection.
