Kathy’s Team at their first 5K in 2007

Steve Mongeau joined Samaritans, Inc. as Executive Director January 1, 2015. He oversees all aspects of Samaritans, focusing on growth of services and development. A survivor of suicide, Samaritans’ volunteer, 5K team captain, Breakfast for Hope table host, and former member of the Board of Directors, including two years as Board Chair, Steve is excited and enthusiastic about leading the team at Samaritans.

After losing his sister Kathy to suicide in 1987, like many families, the Mongeaus did not know where to turn for support. Eighteen years later, Steve came to an info session at Samaritans and began volunteering on the Helpline. That same year, while volunteering at the 5K, he called his six brothers and sisters to tell them that next year he wanted to form a team in memory of Kathy. For the past eleven years, Kathy’s Team has been at Samaritans’ 5K and is consistently one of our top fundraising teams.

Steve has shared, “What Samaritans has done for my family is hard for me to put into words. In my position, I am inspired to help Samaritans reach greater heights, to give all I can to expand our life saving services at Samaritans, in the mission of reducing the incidences of suicide and the circle of pain that surrounds it. We need to grow our capabilities and provide open ears and hearts to all of those in need, and to help them find hope in their lives. As I believe most of you will agree, those we love who have been lost to suicide cannot be defined or remembered by their final act. We can enjoy the memories of good times we shared with them, and it is okay, in fact very helpful, to share those memories with others. Together, through open and honest communication, we can help each other with our journeys through the complex grief that we are experiencing, and in doing so, can open doors to hope.”

Steve, a graduate of the Cornell University School of Social Work, comes to Samaritans with extensive experience in the for-profit sector. His previous position was as the Senior Vice President of Sales and Growth Initiatives at OfficeMax, where he drove positive sales growth after the company had experience five consecutive years of declines. Prior to his position at OfficeMax, Steve served at the Chief Executive Officer at Pietzo Hybrid Electric Bikes, and Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Eduventures, both Massachusetts-based companies. Steve previously spent 14 years with Staples, Inc, holding several positions including the Senior Vice President of Staples Business Advantage, and the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Staples Direct.
